YOGA – The Panacea to Decision Making Skills!!
| IOP Desk - 21 Jun 2022

“For hundreds of millions of people worldwide, yoga has also been an essential lifeline during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing an important means of coping with the challenges of social isolation and stress,” said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his Yoga message for 2022, adding that this year's theme reminds everyone “how yoga is truly universal.” The theme for International Day of Yoga 2022 being observed on June 21 is “Yoga for Humanity”, and it focuses on the importance of yoga in our lives. A number of events are organised around the world to mark the day.

The word ‘yoga’, which is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ and symbolises the union of body and consciousness, is an ancient Indian practice that helps to boost one’s mental and social well-being.

We all need to balance our lives, at every stage we come across a situation where we have to take decisions. It’s the practice that we do every five minutes. Whether to choose to get up or to sleep, to drink water from the fridge or to mix, to wear a white or a black dress, to watch a serial or a movie, to eat chapatti or rice, or taking complex decisions of life. It’s every now and then.

Every human being has a purpose of life. The higher the purpose the greater mental and physical strength is required. We need to make choices and decide to go with either of them. As we grow we understand the value of decision making but this skill is nurtured in the foundation years of an individual. If a person has to run his own family or a country one needs to havea mental strength, calm mind and aggressive thought process along with the healthy body.

The good news is that this all can be nurtured by simply inculcating the art of Yoga in a child’s life!

Yoga is a balancing art. It balances the energies. It helps to create harmonious relationship between body and the mind. A simple 30 minutes of consistent yoga practice can bring amazing transformation in the life of a child. From improved concentration spans, stamina, flexible & energized body, developed focus, sharp memory to balanced temperaments, low anxiety levels, routine and disciplined lifestyle, and one can nurture 360 degree.

In the era of digital world, when everything is on the table in seconds and is competitive, the kids who are aware of the sense of calmness, self-esteem and self-pace turn out to be great achievers. The yogis who developed the “Asana” were really close to nature and hence developed the art to connect with life. “Yogasanas” help to understand the existence, nature and characteristics of different beings, The taadasana, The vajrasana, The bhujangasana, The Naukasana, Prayanamas, Brahmri, etc are basic ones but extremely beneficial for the development of the body that is completely in sync with the mind.

When they stretch like a dog, balance like a flamingo, breathe like a bunny, or stand strong and tall like a tree, they are making a connection between the macrocosm of their environment and the microcosm of their bodies. The importance of reverence for all life and the principle of interdependence become apparent. Children begin to understand that we are all made of the same “Panchmahabhoot” We’re just in different forms.

They understand the value of diversity and acceptance at the same time that lay the foundation of the compassion they need to understand the world and become the thought leaders in the Future.
