Crisis in Pakistan – Not a Good News for India
| Rajive Banerjee, Group Head, Corp Com, Piramal Group - 26 Apr 2023

A fractured state, split into several parts, on our western borders can potentially create a humanitarian crisis that can spill over into India. Wrecked by sectarian violence, terrorism and economic instability in Pakistan, is not good news for India. And it is in India’s interest that Pakistan remains as an entity.  It thus augurs well for India in the long term to engage with its neighbour despite issues like cross border terrorism

It will be an unpopular response to have if one is not rejoicing or fist thumping on the events unfolding in Pakistan. Right from economic to social, the country seems to be in a tailspin. The commentary in certain quarters on this side of the border ranges from ‘chickens have come home to roost,’ ‘that state will implode and split, serve them right’ to ‘let them break apart.

Beyond the moral high ground on whether such reactions are justified or not, the moot point to consider is whether India in the long run stands to benefit from the instability in Pakistan. My personal view is that a country, wrecked by sectarian violence, terrorism and economic instability is not good news for India. And it is in India’s interest that Pakistan remains as an entity.  It thus augurs well for India in the long term to engage with its neighbour despite issues like cross border terrorism. Let us look at why I make such an argument.

There’s enough data on India’s economic progress and the potential of rapid economic development in the time to come. The progress will get accentuated or accelerate if there’s stability in our neighbourhood. India, as the big brother, right since its Independence has had to contend with instability in and around its borders.

A fractured state, split into several parts, on our western borders can potentially create a humanitarian crisis that can spill over into India. This is on account of the common ground in terms of language and culture that States in India share borders with Pakistan. The economic cost of such a humanitarian crisis was evident during the formation of Bangladesh in 1971. So, one wouldn’t want the upheaval in the neighbourhood to spill over into India causing social and economic unrest in the country.

Another unsettling spectre one should keep in mind is that a country that’s deep into an economic, social and terror abyss is ripe for picking for anti-India forces. If the unrest were to exacerbate the deep schism in Pakistan, these elements will have adequate fodder amongst the youth for radicalisation and that doesn’t bode well for India and possibly the rest of the World.

India as the Big Brother in the neighbourhood has shown that it will not hesitate to take decisive action against any mis-adventures. At the same time, it has also displayed great maturity in extending its hand to its neighbours and other countries during times of need.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka and the devastating earthquake in Turkey are case in point. This narrative of India as a country willing to talk and act if need be should be further reinforced by engaging with our Western neighbour.
