Book Review: Cyber Unsafe

By Onkareshwar Pandey

The exponential growth of number of Cyber crimes has posed a new challenge to all digital users across the world. In our country too there was a 400 per cent increase in reported cyber crime cases committed against children in 2020 in comparison to 2019, with most of them relating to publishing or transmitting of materials depicting children in sexually explicit act.

Computer Frauds and Cyber Crimes are a classic example of how digital technology can provide new dimensions to traditional crimes and make them more sophisticated. With ever-increasing reliance on digital technology, the number of digital crimes has been growing exponentially.

During the period of Covid 19, cyber crime surged 12% across the country, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2020.

As the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) 2020 data reveals, there was a sharp rise (over 400 per cent) in cyber crimes (registered under the Information Technology Act) committed against children in comparison to the last year. The report categorically says that even though the number of cyber crime cases committed against children in 2020 remain small, its rise from 2019 is alarming. In 2019, 164 cases of cyber crimes against children were reported while in 2018, 117 cases of cyber crimes were committed against children and 79 such cases were registered in 2017.

The NCRB Data lists Top five states of India reporting cyber crimes against children as under: Uttar Pradesh (170), Karnataka (144), Maharashtra (137), Kerala (107) and Odisha (71). Among the 842 cases of online offences, 738 cases were about publishing or transmitting materials depicting children in sexually explicit act.

However, there is a lack of public awareness of the potential misuse of digital technology, which is further fuelling the growth of these crimes. There is very little reliable information available to help people understand the dangers associated with digital technology.

Understanding the potential cyber threat is necessary at every step. Alertness and awareness about the Computer Frauds has become most important and unavoidable.

Amid the growing cases of Cyber Crimes a new book authored by brother sister duo Dr. Garima Gupta and Dr Gaurav Gupta seeks to guide people on preventive steps against such frauds and crimes. The book 'Cyber Unsafe: A Handbook for Preventing Computer Frauds and Cyber Crimes',  is envisaged as a ready reckoner to help people guard against fraudsters and cyber criminals.

“‘A book that criminals wish you won’t buy’ is perfect anecdote explain the purpose of book. The purpose of ‘Cyber Unsafe’ book is to analyze computer fraud and cyber crime issues from the perspective of a common man and to unmask the myths of computer frauds and cyber crimes, with a hope to reduce the exploitation of the common man by criminals, says Dr Gaurav Gupta who is the first Indian to earn a doctorate in the field of digital forensics. He was bestowed with the Young Scientist Award of the Indian Science Congress in 2010 by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

“In this book, we have used relatable real-world incidents and stories to demonstrate the risks associated with digital technology. Further, easy-to-implement, mostly nontechnical, methods have been identified for technology users to help them safeguard against prevailing computer frauds and cyber crimes,” said Co-author Garima Gupta, who is an independent researcher and has experience in fields such as science, education, and psychology. She completed her post-doctoral studies from IIIT Delhi.

The book has been envisaged as a ready reckoner for anyone who uses digital technology. It will help readers safeguard themselves against computer frauds and cyber crimes. Cyber Unsafe busts the myths surrounding digital technology and related crimes.

This book provides a completely new perspective on technology-related frauds and help readers become aware and responsible citizens in cyber space.

The Book “Cyber Unsafe” contains sixty two probable myths which most of technology users may have and highlights how criminals exploit human emotions to carry out frauds and cyber crimes. The book is available on amazon with its name.
