After Chandrayaan, ISRO ready to Launch Shukrayaan-1
| IOP Desk - 14 May 2022

The main aim of Shukrayaan-1 mission is to study the atmosphere of the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus is known to have clouds of sulfuric acid covering the planet in addition to having a corrosive and toxic atmosphere. The study will essentially help find answers to what conditions and reasons made Venus an inferno.

While addressing the Venusian science day-long meeting that took place on 4th May, S. Somnath, the Chairman of ISRO announced the mission to Venus. He further added, “Work has been going for years. Currently, the Venus mission is conceived, the project report is made, overall plans are ready, money identified, all that thing is done. Building and putting a mission on Venus is possible for India in a very short space of time, as the capability today exists with India.”

Indian is emerging as a space fairing nation after its successful as well as efficient mission to the Moon and the Mars. The ISRO has set Venus as its next target because experts have stated that Venus was once like the Earth, hence known as Earth-Twin. As the current leader in low-cost interplanetary missions, ISRO is working on identifying the uniqueness of the mission. When talking about the mission, S Somnath explained, “It will be hailed only if it is unique, just like Chandrayaan and the Mars mission."

The Venus mission named as Shukrayaan-1 has the launch window in Dec 2024 where an orbital maneuver is planned for a year. The technique of orbital maneuver is referred to using propulsion systems to change the orbit of a spacecraft. This makes it possible for the spacecraft to change the planet orbits. In 2025, the spacecraft will be able to enter orbit of the Venus with minimum amount of propellant because of the way the two planets will be aligned. The next launch window for Venus is in 2031.

Aim of the mission

The main aim of Shukrayaan-1 mission is to study the atmosphere of the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus is known to have clouds of sulfuric acid covering the planet in addition to having a corrosive and toxic atmosphere. The study will essentially help find answers to what conditions and reasons made Venus an inferno.

Missions headed to Venus

Apart of ISRO, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced two missions to explore Venus. The American agency is spending $1 billion on the two robotic missions which are expected to be launched between 2028-2030. The missions are essentially named as DAVINCI+ and VERITAS.

Furthermore, European Space Agency has announced the mission to Earth’s evening star. Europe's EnVision will provide insights from the upper atmosphere from the Venus to its core.
