Sustainability is slowly becoming the new buzz word in the market. From artisans, to entrepreneurs, to academicians, to politicians, everyone is busy inculcating this new phenomenon in their lives. Indians have always proved their mettle across a variety of different areas and today we discuss an Indian Success story as a part of our new series discussing the ‘Positive News’ for the day.
India has time and again proven to have been a treasure trove of creative artisans who put their innovative talents to use, albeit not for any major monetary remunerations, but unfortunately for day-to-day subsistence. The Ministry of Textiles has introduced various new schemes for the benefit of the innumerable artisans across the length and the breadth of the country, especially with the rolling out of the ‘Artisan Card’ which enables easier identification of the artisans along with streamlining a number of benefits and schemes. Despite the obvious positive outcomes of these public schemes, they fail to address the various hardships and shortcomings faced by these poor artisans. Fortunately, every cloud does have a silver lining, and so does our story.
Hema Sarda, a middle-aged Gujarati woman after spending nearly two decades working alongside her husband, helping him in his accountancy firm, made a rather unique career transition by becoming an entrepreneur in 2016. The famous art exhibition at Delhi's Dilli Haat, proved to be the much-needed inspiration for Hema.
The idea of intricately designed organic jewelry made from bamboo, piqued Hemaben’s interest, and this idea slowly germinated into a very successful business venture. The talent and enterprising abilities of the artisans always inspired her, and she wanted to somehow ensure that they get their due. Despite facing various hardships and obstacles at various junctures, Hemaben never gave up on the idea, and that definitely should be hailed.
Despite not meeting the artisans in person, Hemaben has forged great trust with all of them and has helped them earn a stable income of 60-70,000 rupees per month changing their lives completely for the better. An initial corpus of just 15,000 has grown exponentially to an annual turnover of 5 lakh within a period of just 3 years.
What’s even more interesting to note here is that, the name of this unique business is even more fascinating and rather apt for the endeavor – ‘Bambouandbunch’. This truly innovative business has also received many national and international laurels, including the prestigious International Craft Award for the best brand from India Craft Village, Delhi in 2020.
