| Dr. D. D. Vyas, Dean, Atmiya University, Rajkot, Gujarat - 20 May 2022

The study reveals ancient universities of India like Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramshila and Vallabhi as centres where holistic knowledge was sought and imparted. They present seamless co-existence between nature and humans as well as between living and learning. NEP-2020 find its roots in the ancient Indian higher education model and aims to develop all capabilities of human beings – intellectual, aesthetic, social, physical, emotional, and moral in an integrated manner.

National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 is an ambitious re-imagination of the education system in India. The policy aims to restructure the entire education system by the year 2040 through systematic transformation rather than incremental reforms. Access, equity, relevance, social justice and quality were identified as the important dimensions in earlier National Education Policies.

NEP-2020 adds to these dimensions of creativity and innovation through an emphasis on multi-disciplinary, global and holistic education.

The learning model for Higher education aspired in NEP-2020 is a convergence of the rich heritage of Indian higher education with the present needs of the 21st century. Universities have always been considered to be the temple of knowledge with three basic activities namely teaching, research and community service.

Number of major reforms has been envisaged in NEP-2020 to achieve its goals. Talking particularly about learning models in higher education some of the major reforms are discussed here. The foremost being Institutional restructuring and consolidation that will lead to the end of the fragmented higher education system and bring in place large multidisciplinary universities and/or higher education clusters.

The second is the flexible and liberal educational system that allows the learner to choose their learning trajectories through facilities like multiple entry and exit options, Academic Bank of Credit, promotion of regional language in education, etc.

The third is fostering quality academic research through the formation of National Research Foundation and enabling a robust ecosystem of research at higher education institutes. In addition to this other important reforms include – teacher’s education, vocational education, adult education and life-long learning, internationalization, etc.

At Atmiya University, we believe that NEP-2020 when implemented in its right spirit will certainly lead to a transformative model of education in India. Imbibing the essence of Atmiyata, this campus in its 50+ years of academic journey has always promoted education that is experiential, integrated, inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centred, interesting and more importantly character-building. We are committed to the values of NEP-2020 and aspire to be the front runners in this nation-building exercise through transformative education.
