Kochi, Jan 17, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated three major infrastructure projects in Kochi, Kerala, worth over Rs. 4,000 crores.

These projects include the New Dry Dock at Cochin Shipyard Limited, the International Ship Repair Facility of Cochin Shipyard Limited, and the LPG Import Terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Limited at Puthuvypeen, Kochi.

These projects align with the Prime Minister's vision to transform India's ports, shipping, and waterways sector and enhance its capacity and self-sufficiency.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister mentioned his visit to the Bhagwan Guruvyurappan temple earlier in the day and the significance of the holy temples of Kerala associated with Ramayan. He expressed gratitude for being able to perform darshan at the Ramaswamy temple just days before the Pran Pratishtha at the Ayodhya Dham.

He also appreciated the beautiful presentation by Kerala artists, which brought the feel of Awadh Puri to Kerala.

The Prime Minister emphasized the role of every state in India's development and highlighted the importance of ports in the country's prosperity. He mentioned the government's efforts to improve the strength of port cities like Kochi through increased capacity, investment in infrastructure, and improved connectivity under the Sagarmala Project.

PM Modi also acknowledged the significance of the new infrastructure projects for Kerala and the southern region of the country. He noted the honor of building the 'Made in India' aircraft carrier INS Vikrant with the Kochi Shipyard and highlighted the reforms made in the ports, shipping, and waterways sector, which have attracted investments and created employment opportunities.

The Prime Minister remarked on the double-digit annual growth achieved by Indian ports in the last 10 years and the improvement in ship-turnaround time. He mentioned the agreements made during India's G20 Presidency regarding the Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which will strengthen India's coastal economy.

He also mentioned the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision and the government's efforts to build mega ports, shipbuilding, and ship-repairing infrastructure. PM Modi emphasized the national pride of India in the new dry dock, which will reduce dependence on foreign countries and save foreign exchange.

He highlighted the transformation of Kochi into India and Asia's largest ship repair center with the International Ship Repair Facility. He also mentioned the new LPG Import Terminal, which will meet the LPG needs of several areas and support industries and economic development.

The Prime Minister praised Kochi Shipyard's green technology capacities and its contribution to the 'Make in India' initiative. He mentioned the electric vessels made for the Kochi Water Metro and the work on zero-emission electric cargo ferries and hydrogen-fueled container vessels.

He highlighted the role of the fishermen community in the blue economy and port-led development and the government's efforts to boost India's seafood processing sector.

In conclusion, PM Modi wished for the continued rapid development of Kerala and congratulated the citizens on the new infrastructure projects.

Governor of Kerala Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, were present at the inauguration.
