HACKATHON: SOLVE FOR SAFER INDIA

Developing Implementable Digital Solution for Road Safety

By Didhiti Ghosh, Bureau Chief (Kolkata), Indian Observer Post

Kolkata/New Delhi, March 17, 2019: With an aim to curb the issues pertaining to road safety by developing implementable solutions in the form of a digital solution, Indian Road Safety Campaign has organized a platform called “Hackathon: Solve for Safer India” from 30th to 31st March 2019.

The Hackathon has been organized in association with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the United Nations Institute of Training and Research, IIT Guwahati and BOSCH India to address and solve the issue of deaths due to road accidents. Indian Observer Post is the Media Partner for Indian Road Safety Campaign’s Hackathon: Solve for Safer India.

The Hackathon aims to promote road safety using the intellect and ideation capabilities of young students of premier technical colleges of India. Believing that the youth are the agents to bring positive change, the event, they predict, will bring about a tremendous impact in the haphazard scenario existing at a massive scale on the issue of land transport and safety.

The long-term goal of Hackathon is to launch implementable products and solutions by harnessing creativity and expertise of the students that aim to solve many of the prevalent road safety related problems and create viable social impact using their technical skills.

The event has been divided into three phases -

Phase 1 - Ideation

Students will register and submit their ideas on the online portal.

Phase 2 - Report Submission

Selected Students will submit an execution plan of action/report of their idea.

Phase 3 - Onsite Competition

All the selected teams from phase 2 would be working in the 36 hours Hackathon to develop a prototype at IIT-Guwahati on the aforementioned dates.

Sumit Kumar, IPS says, “Road safety is one of the biggest challenges before a developing country like India. Given a large number of fatalities and serious injuries, it contributes a lot in dragging down growth, the same being vital for reducing poverty and improving quality of common life.”

Lack of awareness around road safety has an adverse effect on the country. The youth particularly is the most vulnerable age group that falls into the category of road traffic injuries. India’s increasing road crash fatalities, especially among youngsters, calls for an urgent need to promote road safety and practice safety measures.

In the same light, IRSC has organized a panel discussion on “How Youth and Technology can contribute to Road Safety” under Hackathon on 31st March from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at IIT Guwahati. The discussion will stimulate the thinking on how prudent use of technology can contribute to road safety.

Kumar also reflected that in the direction of reducing accidents and reducing road safety, there is a need to first accumulate ideas with the participation of youth, road safety experts, traffic police and the academia. The present project by Indian Road Safety Campaign is one such event, where some of the selected ideas should be promoted through focused and practical implementation. He also noted that the successful ideas must be propagated to other cities for wide-spread implementation.

Rishi Dayanand, Vice President (IRSC) commented that the same event will help the participants in having an idea about the real-world events driving this motive. “We have already collaborated with Bosch India to arrive at a joint internship partnership for the top selected,” Dayanand said.

“Our event seeks to creatively engage the mind of youth with the cause of road safety and ignite the spark in them on how technology can be used to solve the problem of road safety,” said Md Javed Quraishi, an organizing team member.

Deepanshu Gupta, Lead Marketing & Communications (IRSC) extends the idea to form business partnership with automotive companies where only the outstanding participants’ projects will be implemented real-time in automobile manufacturing.

The unique event is being organized in a pan-India scale and is an excellent opportunity for the students to merge technical skills with their social concerns and thereby deliver an exceptional project which will yield the desired solution for safer roads in India.
