Manipur Congress Gives Warm Reception to AICC President

Imphal, March 19, 2019: All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Rahul Gandhi today said that his party will give special status to the state of Manipur and will never allow BJP to pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

The contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 which shook the entire North Eastern region could not be tabled in the last session of Rajya Sabha as the interim Budget session of the RS adjourned sine die in view of the numerous controversies surrounding the session and the ruckus created by the opposition parties.

The Lok Sabha had passed the bill last month but it was not ratified by the Rajya Sabha before the end of its last session before the election.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill had incited exceptional opposition in the entire northeastern states where for years residents have complained that migrants from Bangladesh are a burden on society.

The controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill is aimed at providing Citizenship to the Hindus and members of other non-Muslim minority communities from neighbouring Muslim countries in India.

For days, protesters had taken to the streets, bringing chaos to several cities in the region. Authorities have responded with curfews and blocks on broadcasters in an attempt to quell the unrest. There were curfew imposed in the two districts of Imphal due to the protests from the civil society organizations MANPAC and PAM against the Bill.

Even the chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh was also compelled to assert that the CAB 2016 was not passed in the Rajya Sabha because of the people’s support.

In Imphal, Rahul Gandhi said, “An ideological fight is going on in the country between BJP-RSS and the Congress and other parties. The major difference is that the BJP and RSS think that only One Culture should be there in the country. And we think that, India is a vast multicultural country and all should be allowed to live in their own style and tradition.”

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee gave a warm reception to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Rahul Gandhi, who landed at Imphal Airport at 5.00 pm on Tuesday.

Rahul Gandhi paid floral tribute to the martyrs at Shahid Minar at Imphal and also visited Ema Keithel Market (World’s only Women Market run by women) and had a closed-door meeting with state Congress leaders at Congress Bhawan in the heart of City.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi will stay tonight in Imphal and will deliver one hour speech at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal tomorrow. According to party sources, he will interact with different personalities of Manipur including Students of Manipur Central University.

Rahul Gandhi has prepared a nine point agenda to speak on the state issues.

Earlier, Members of MPCC including CLP leader O. Ibobi visited the site for public meeting at Hapta Kangjeibung where Rahul Gandhi will speak to a gathering tomorrow.

Speaking to media persons while inspecting the preparation done at Hapta Kangjeibung CLP leader O. Ibobi said that Gandhi-Nehru family has a strong feeling towards North East specially Manipur. He appealed the people of the state to attend the visit of Rahul Gandhi at Imphal. He added that the people might be eager to hear what Rahul might say about the different issues of International, National and regional especially about the state.

Ibobi claimed that Congress party has taken very seriously about the commitments and the manifesto given by the party. He appealed the people to hear about the burning issues to be delivered by Rahul Gandhi and asked the people need to judge if the party did it or not in the near future.

President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Gaikhangam said that the visit of Rahul Gandhi at Imphal is a great opportunity for the people not only for MPCC.  He added that the present government has been very repressive and even greater than during the period of British colonial era. He said that the government has been silencing the voice which critique against the government and considers them as anti-national and charged under sedition. He added that the nation has been witnessing dark days.

Gaikhangam further stressed that the people of the nation considered that Rahul Gandhi as the saviour of the nation which will liberate from the impressive regime of the government. He concluded that the meeting is not for the party only but for the state too. He appealed the people to attend and participate the meeting

Clarifying the statements about BJP where they claimed that they will win by attaining more than three hundred seats, Gaikhangam said that the BJP’s claim is simply a daydream where they will not even score 200 seats as the whole of the nation considers uprooting the present government as they will destroy the nation

He will be giving a speech to a mammoth gathering according to MPCC which will be held tomorrow at Hapta Kangjeibung. Interaction with the youths will also be there.
