ICCR Bengal Commemorates Pulwama Heroes with Fusion Music

By Didhiti Ghosh, Bureau Chief (Kolkata), India Observer Post

Kolkata, March 22, 2019: GIMA award-winning noted percussionist & tabla maestro Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee recently presented a unique musical concert “Music for World Peace” in the memory of the Pulwama martyrs. The concert, held at Satyajit Ray Auditorium was supported by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR, Kolkata) and Kalyani Roy Memorial Trust.

Mukherjee’s Rhythm Express created sensation having won the prestigious GLOBAL INDIA MUSIC AWARDS (GIMA) 2016 for its album “Moods” in collaboration with the legendary maestro Padmashree Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

Rhythm Express encompasses a vast spectrum of musical genres ranging from traditional Hindustani classical to South Indian classical notes and extending beyond the boundaries of India, the same is also global in its musical influences adapting African, Latin American, Jazz & Blues and traditional Western classical notes. Prodyut, during his travels across the globe, has been influenced by the beauty of rhythmic styles and has, in turn, incorporated the same in the musical styles of Rhythm Express.

The musical evening was graced by the presence of Consul General of Japan, Masayuki Taga, Goutam De, Regional Director of ICCR and other high profile dignitaries.

Grammy Award-winning musician & Padma Bhushan Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, noted santoor maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee presented fusion music, the theme of which embraced world peace. Some new compositions added a new dimension to this gala performance. Noted Ravindrasangeet exponent Srabani Sen lent her voice to a Tagore song (Madhur Madhur Dhwani Baaje) with a unique musical presentation.

Besides, noted actor cum singer of Bengal Saheb Chatterjee sang a song by Tagore (Tomay Natun Kore Pabo Bole) with the same musical soundscape. Two more offbeat singers IPS Sujoy Chanda and Ashish Chatterjee also rendered Bengali popular folk songs.

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt performed one of his Grammy-winning compositions “Meeting by the River” followed by GIMA award-winning composition “Within You” from the Rhythm Express' album “Moods” in which the sound design and concept were directed by Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee. Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya performed his compositions like “Pahadi”, “Dreams” and many other notable compositions.

Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt said, “Every citizen of India must feel responsible and emotional for our soldiers. As musicians, we can express our sorrow through our musical notes. The Kirwani Raag expresses melancholic mood, which is my tribute to the Pulwama martyrs. Let us transform the melancholy to happiness by tributing them the Hansadhwani Raag which stands for happiness.”

In the words of Gautam De, Regional Director (Kolkata) of ICCR, “In recent times, the ugly head of terrorism has raised its head in the horizon. In these circumstances, music can bring peace and tranquillity in the world. By this humble initiative of ICCR Kolkata, we bring to platform a trio of world-renowned musicians enabling them to perform in the Satyajit Ray Auditorium. I hope that this kind of musical event will spread the message of love and harmony among people in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack.”

This musical event adorned by fusion music from Indian maestros was an artistic treat for the music buffs of Kolkata.

The past 3 years, in particular, have seen a vibrant increase in the ICCR’s cultural activities and in 2017 the occupancy of the forum was 95%, one of the highest in its history.
