Guwahati, March 23, 2019: The ruling party BJP and central leaders of the party is very hopeful and they are expecting to get at least 12 seats from Assam among its 14 seats. It is important to mention here that there are 25 parliamentary constituencies in the North East region. And the party had formed NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance) under the Chairmanship of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to create a Congress-free North East.

But NPP, the big brother of NEDA, had first declared that they would contest separately in the ensuing parliamentary election and they have already declared their candidature at five constituencies of Assam and two constituencies of Meghalaya.

After the declaration of Meghalaya CM and NPP president Konrad Sangma, BJP central leadership is in deep trouble and the central leadership has decided not to offer ticket to Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who was an aspiring candidate from Tezpur parliamentary constituency.

In a recent tweet, the party president Amit Shah wrote that as Himanta Biswa Sarma had been given the responsibility of NEDA, so he needs more time to concentrate for the upliftment of the party. So, he was not offered the party ticket only to serve a particular constituency.

The most interesting fact is that the BJP has deprived five sitting MPs of Assam and they are Bijaya Chakraborty from Guwahati, Ram Prasad Sharma from Tezpur, Ramen Deka from Mongoldoi, present Railway Minister Rajen Gohain from Nagaon, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from Jorhat.

Meanwhile, after the declaration of party ticket today by the party central leadership the railway minister and present MP Rajen Gohain says “I declared at my last press conference that I would not contest this time as a case was going on trial. Before my press conference, I got a call from a leader at mid night that the party would offer candidature to my wife instead of me. I was assured from the party for her candidature and moreover I had great contribution to the party as party 'karyakorta'. I had won the parliamentary seat twenty years before and I won it four times. I feel our old karyakorta are neglected this time. RP Sarma, Ramen Deka, Bijaya Chakraborty all are not getting party tickets. I am a victim of a political conspiracy. I believe in central leadership. Let’s hope for the best.”

A case of rape and sexual exploitation is pending against the Union minister of state for railway Rajen Gohain who was denied the party Ticket. Two sisters had lodged an FIR with the Assam police against accusing him of rape and sexual exploitation in the name of giving jobs in the ministry. The Nagaon police has registered the FIR (no. 2592/18) under IPC Section 417/376/506 against the union minister on the basis of the complaint of two sisters. In the FIR, the victims alleged that union minister was sexually exploiting them for last seven-eight months in the name of giving jobs.

The victims, residents of Deorigaon area in Nagaon, also claimed that they also have the clips of inappropriate telephonic conversation of the minister with them. The elder sister who lodged the FIR said that her younger sister was also lured and sexually exploited by the minister in the name of giving jobs in the railways.

On the other hand, after the declaration of candidature of Pallab Lochan Das, a Minister in Sarbanand Sonowal led Assam Govt, at Tezpur parliamentary constituency, the aspiring candidate and present MP Ram Prasad Sarma said, “After 23rd of March, I will form a new BJP with our deprived leaders. We all believe in RSS principle and we had great contributions to the party. So, we will not allow the party to destroy. We will reform it and revive it.”

Talking to media, Sitting BJP MP from Assam's Tezpur parliamentary constituency, Ram Prasad Sarmah, on Saturday said that he will float a new party which will bring in all the old and "neglected" BJP leaders. Sarmah, however, did not elaborate if the proposed new party will be floated immediately or after the elections are over.

Sarmah said that he is not a "chowkidar" but an employee of the people. "There is no value and place for old leaders of the party in Assam. All the neglected leaders will be brought together in the new party," he said.

The MP has already resigned from the party after the state leadership and election committee did not include his name in the panel sent to the BJP's Parliamentary Board to consider for the forthcoming polls. Announcing his resignation on Facebook, Sarmah had blamed "some intruders" for the neglect of the BJP's old guard.

While there was a strong anti-incumbency factor against him in the constituency, he also got entangled in some controversies, including the multi-crore cash for job scam that also landed one of his daughters in jail.

Two other senior BJP MPs Bijaya Chakraborty and Ramen Deka have not made any comment on record after the declaration of party candidature. The party will contest in ten constituencies and AGP will contest in three while another alliance partner BPF will contest in one seat i.e Kokrajhar in the ensuing parliament election.

A senior leader of the party who does not want to disclose his name says “Most of the leaders are not satisfied with present strategy of selecting candidates. The party will not be able to show a good result in this election. Resentment is increasing day by day.”

The BJP has fielded former mayor Queen Ojha in Guwahati, which is considered one of the state’s toughest battlegrounds with its diverse voter base. Ojha has replaced former union minister and veteran party leader in Assam Bijoya Chakraborty, who has represented the seat thrice since 1999.

“I am extremely happy, but this happiness comes with a lot of responsibility. I am overwhelmed by the support by party members and well-wishers. I am confident of winning. When I was the Mayor here, people had welcomed me with open arms and have since kept faith in my work,” said Queen Ojha.
