Manipur Celebrates 10^th Chilli Festival with Colourful Folk Dance

Imphal, Aug 23, 2019: Manipur is celebrating the spiciest Chilli Festival with fun and folk dance by the youths of the local village.

The 10th Hathei Phanit (Chilli Festival) began on Thursday at Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul district. Ukhrul DC Joseph Pauline Kamson inaugurated the festival.

Considering the higher produces this year, dried chilli will be sold at Rs 400 per kg. The same was sold at Rs 500 per kg last year.

The yield is higher this year due to deficient rain. When other crops such as paddy depend on adequate rains, chilli plantation however needs little rain. Around 80 tonnes of chilli are produced this year.

In his speech, DC spoke about the uniqueness and the commercial value of the chilli.

He said that the village was very special because no other in the state can claim that they are producing the same variety and it can be said that this chilli is the copyright of the village same as the lemon of Kachai village and the oranges of Tamenglong.

“The village is very blessed to have such a unique product grown in the land. It can be taken as a blessing from an Almighty God,” he said.

He further said that the chilli was not only pleasing to look at, it also has lots of nutritional value as studied by experts and encouraged chilli farmers to expand their products on large commercial scale.

N Premananda Singh, Mission Director, MIDH who attended the function said that the Sirarakhong Chilli is known internationally with its own GI tagging from the government of India. He said that the state horticulture department has been working along with the farmers and it worth mentioning that the particular chilli has high contents of calcium, its structure is also different from other species of chillis.

APO (Press) Tenshubam Sangeeta of DIPR, who also attended the function as guest of honour highlighted the activities of DIPR.

“DIPR has been taking serious and important role to make public aware of the governmental schemes and projects. At the same time, public feedbacks are also sent to the government. So the directorate is playing an important role in achieving good governance in the state,” she said.

During the festival, around 20 stalls belonging to Self Help Groups showcased their products including handloom and handicraft.
