Doctors Protest in Assam, Four Doctors Resigned

Doctor fraternity of Assam demands security at workplace reports, Monalisa Gogoi, Bureau Chief, IOP, Guwahati

Guwahati, Sept. 03, 2019: Indian Medical Council has observed 24 hours strike today protesting the death of Doctor Deben Dutta on Saturday last. Four doctors of four different tea estates of Assam have resigned today from their jobs in protest of the mob lynching incident which took place on 31st of August.

They mention that Assam Chah Majdoor Sangha (ACMS) has been maintaining silence against this inhumanitarian barbaric attack on Deben Dutta. This really instigates the common people to involve in such more incidents and which will help to create more 'Deben Dutta' in the near future.
The death of the victim occurred when the tea garden workers of Teok Tea garden became violent after the death of their co worker.

According to them, they attacked because at that time Doctor Dutta was not present at the hospital and their patient died because of wrong treatment.

It is important to mention here that the victim had been serving without remuneration at that tea estate after his retirement.

The victim was 73 years old and at the time of patient's entry at the hospital the victim went for lunch and as soon as he got call from his colleague, he came to attend the patient.

As the patient was suffering from a heart attack because of high blood pressure, he breathed his last after an injection pushed by the doctor.

After the declaration of death, more than 400 workers came out of their homes and started to attack the doctor.

The mob became so violent that they did not allow carrying him to an ambulance which was waiting outside.

As a result, Deben Dutta succumbed death before he reached the hospital.

This is the third such incident of attack on the doctor at a tea garden in Assam.

After this shocking incident of mob lynching, the doctor fraternity of Assam has started a protest and demand their protection and security at their working place.

Total 36 persons were arrested so far and 22 were sent to jail till now.

Health services are interrupted in the whole state while emergency services are continued in the hospitals.

Public hearing has begun today and it will be continued for another two days.On the other hand, the management has declared lock out at Teok tea estate.

Meanwhile, Assam Ayurvedic Doctors Association also supported this protest of doctors.

All the organizations of the state have demanded severe punishment of the culprits.
