Will Scrapping of Special Status Ensure a Better Future for J&K’s Youth?
| IOP Desk - 04 Sep 2019
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have justified the move saying it will bring development and economic prosperity to the restive state.
  • But, if Kashmir is not better off in the coming years than it was before, if all the curfew and restrictions faced right now, do not justify the end, then the hypothesis“this-is-a-historic-blunder” will stand vindicated.

Pune, Sep 04, 2019: On 5th August, Art 370 and Art 35A were histories. Received with mixed reactions, some who had come to believe that this issue would never resolve were jubilant at the turn of events. Equally taken aback was a large section of people who found this unilateral action as the antithesis to democracy.

While the sudden shift in the Kashmir’s status quo has not received much of a backlash from the world, it has definitely made Pakistan seek out every last favour from its “uncles” across the world.

Its maneuvers have stirred up a debate in the UNSC, while the domestic discussion seems to be revolving around the constitutionality of it. But very few seem to be concerned whether the revocation of special status is good for the Kashmiris themselves?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have justified the move saying it will bring development and economic prosperity to the restive state.

Bringing to notice the lack of appreciation in property values due to restriction on ownership, the abrogation would enable professionals like doctors and teachers to come to Kashmir.

Kashmiri women who lose their right to property on getting married to non-kashmiris would be benefitted.

The employment will be on the rise due to setting up of Central government companies as well as private companies. Hotel and travel companies and the film industry will be able to milk the tourism potential.

The point being, economic prosperity will make the state strong enough to fend off terrorist and separatist forces.

On the social platform, the Scs, STs, and OBCs will get a reservation. Central laws will reach the people, for example, the triple Talaq ban, minimum wages, etc. Government employees will get the same benefits as in other states such as LTC and HRA.

Democracy will be upheld for people will be able to actively vote in Vidhan Sabha, Mahanagar Palika, and Panchayat elections. Corruption and terrorism will be fought in a more efficient way. Ladakhi sentiment was acknowledged by bringing them out of the shadow of Kashmir and giving them a UT status.

On the same note as the Prime Minister, I believe that economic prosperity will help alleviate the restive and alienating factors. Stability has been incentivized by promising that the UT status is temporary. Of course, the only determining factor is the delivery on promises.

If Kashmir is not better off in the coming years than it was before, if all the curfew and restrictions faced right now, do not justify the end, then the hypothesis“this-is-a-historic-blunder” will stand vindicated.

The critics too accept the move, only probing its constitutionality. The statistics presented are being questioned, saying Kashmir has fared better on many indexes in comparison to a few other Indian states. The real question is, is this the best that J&K can do? Is the best hope for the paradise-on-earth just striving for survival rather than flourishing and thriving?
