Trump Announces Travel Ban on Iranian Regime Elite and Families to the US

Indian Observer Post
WASHINGTON, SEP 26, 2019: Barely after 15 hours of giving the US State Department the authority to bar senior Iranian officials and their family members from entering the United States as immigrants or nonimmigrants, the President Donald Trump Today announced a Presidential Proclamation restricting entry into the United States for Elite and Families of Iranian Regime.

Under this proclamation, designated senior regime officials and their families will no longer be allowed entry into the United States. No longer will elites reap the benefits of a free society while the Iranian people suffer under the regime’s corruption and mismanagement.

For years, Iranian officials and their family members have quietly taken advantage of America’s freedom and prosperity, including excellent educational, employment, entertainment, and cultural opportunities in the United States.

This Presidential Proclamation is per the authority vested in the President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including sections 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) (8 U.S.C. 1182 (f) and 1185 (a)) and section 301 of title 3, United States Code.

The White House proclamation, repeated U.S. accusations that Iran sponsors terrorism, arbitrarily detains American citizens, threatens its neighbors and carries out destructive cyber attacks.

“The Government of Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. The regime has destabilized the Persian Gulf region with attacks on oil and shipping infrastructure.

Their support for the Houthis in Yemen and Shia militias in Iraq and Syria contribute to the regional instability and the humanitarian crises in those countries.

The Iranian regime continues to suppress members of ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, as well as unjustly detaining foreign citizens to perpetuate their foreign policy aims, the U.S. Department of State said in a press release issued at around 10 pm IST.
Iranian officials were not available to comment.

America will no longer allow senior Iranian regime officials or their family members to continue to travel to the United States while their people suffer.

“Given that this behavior threatens peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond, I have determined that it is in the interest of the United States to take action to restrict and suspend the entry into the United States, as immigrants or nonimmigrants, of senior government officials of Iran, and their immediate family members,” Trump said in the proclamation

President Trump has given authority to decide who would be covered by the proclamation to the secretary of state of the U.S. State Department, or whomever he or she designates.

President Trump also provided exceptions, saying that among others the proclamation would not apply to lawful U.S. permanent residents, those granted asylum, or refugees already admitted to the United States. He also provided possible exceptions for people whose entry “would further important ... law enforcement objectives.”

Since last year, the U.S.-Iranian confrontation has ratcheted up, when Trump withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with major powers and reimposed sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy. Trump wants to go beyond that deal to further curb Iran’s nuclear program, halt its ballistic missile work and end its support for proxy forces in the Middle East, according to a report in the Voice of America News, the U.S. international broadcaster.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier said the United States would have to “pay more” if it wanted a wider deal and rejected meeting with the U.S. president for now. Both men were in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly gathering of world leaders.
