141st Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union being held in Belgrad from 13 to 17 October 2019

New Delhi, 11 October 2019: Shri Om Birla, Speaker, Lok Sabha, would be participating in the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union to be held in Belgrade, Serbia from 13 to 17 October 2019. An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Shri Om Birla will also participate in the Assembly.

The other members on the Delegation are Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP, Smt. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP, Smt. Wansuk Syiem, MP, Shri Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP, Dr. Bhartiben Dhirubhai Shyal, MP, Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, MP, Shri Ram Kumar Verma, MP, Shri Sasmit Patra, MP, Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava, Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Shri Desh Deepak Verma, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha, and Shri P.C. Koul, Joint Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat and Secretary to the Delegation. The delegation will depart for the Assembly on 12th October, 2019.

During the Assembly, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha would be addressing the august gathering of Presiding Officers and Parliamentarians from 179 Member countries on overall theme of the Assembly “Strengthening international law: Parliamentary roles and mechanisms, and the contribution of regional cooperation”. After the Conclusion of the General debate a declaration will be adopted by the Assembly. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha will also address the august gathering on Development and Economy at the Speakers’ Dialogue on Governance to be held during the Assembly.

During the Assembly, Members of the Indian delegation will be participating in the various meetings of the Standing Committees of IPU, Governing Council, Forum of Women Parliamentarians, Forum of Young Parliamentarians and Panel Discussions on important subjects.

The Members will also attend the Meetings of the Parliamentary Forum on BRICS and Coordination Meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) to be held on the sidelines. The Secretaries-General of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will attend the meetings of the Association of the Secretary-General of Parliaments (ASGP).

The Speaker, Lok Sabha will also hold various Bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other Parliaments on the sidelines to discuss matters of mutual interest and increased parliamentary cooperation.

As a focal point for worldwide parliamentary dialogue since 1889, the IPU works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative institutions.
