Guwahati, Oct 19, 2019: A 25-member team of the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Forces has commenced a joint military exercise with Indian Army soldiers at the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) at Vairengte in India’s North Eastern State Mizoram on Saturday, Oct 19, 2019.

Dharma Guardian Military exercise with Japan is crucial and significant in terms of security challenges faced by both the nations in the backdrop of global terrorism. The scope of this exercise covers platoon level joint training on counter terrorism operations in the jungle and urban scenarios.

This is the second edition of the bilateral annual military Exercise Dharma Guardian – 2019 between the Indian and Japan Army which will continue till November 2. This joint military exercise is an annual training event which is being conducted in India since 2018.

The Japanese contingent is represented by 34th Infantry Regiment, 1st Div of Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF), while the Indian side is represented by a battalion of the Dogra Regiment. 25 soldiers from the battalions are participating in this joint exercise.

The aim of the exercise is joint training of troops in counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations in both mountainous terrains. Exercise Dharma Guardian – 2019 will further cement the long-standing strategic ties between India and Japan.

Both countries will share their experiences gained during various counter-terrorism operations in the respective countries, Defence spokesperson Wing Commander Ratnakar Singh has said.

As part of the exercise, important lectures, demonstrations, and drills related to counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations will be conducted. Both the Armies will also share their valuable experiences in countering such situations as also refined drills and procedures for joint operations.

The Exercise will culminate with a 72 hours validation phase which will test the skills of soldiers in conducting joint operations in a counter terrorism scenario.

The scope of the exercise will cover platoon-level joint training on counter-terrorism operations in jungle and urban scenarios.

The joint military exercise will enhance the level of defence co-operation between Indian Army and Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF) which in turn will further foster the bilateral relations between the two nations, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence earlier.
