Devendra Fadnavis Resigns, President's Rule Likely in Maharashtra

By Onkareshwar Pandey

Mumbai/New Delhi, Nov 8, 2019: Hours before the deadline for government formation in Maharashtra ends with the current assembly session coming to an end on November 9, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met the governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and tendered his resignation from the post of the chief minister.

Fadnavis said the governor has accepted his resignation.

Addressing media after tendering his resignation, Devendra Fadnavis alleged that Shiv Sena has betrayed the mandate given by voters of the state.

We never spoke ill against Balasaheb Thackeray or even against Uddhav Ji. The kind of statements they were making against out top leader, PM Modi, is unfortunate and unacceptable. Low-level attack against PM Narendra Modi will not be tolerated anymore, Fadnavis said.

“What is happening today is a complete disrespect of the mandate of the people of Maharashtra. This is not the tone one adopts when we have to work together in a govt.,” said Fadnavis.

“Shiv Sena has closed all channels of communications. It looks like they have already made up their minds to go the other way. They didn't talk to us; they held consultations with Congress and NCP,” he said.

“This could have been solved through dialogue. We have worked together with Uddhavji over the last 5 years, but this time when I called him, he didn't even pick up the phone.,” Fadnavis said.

On the issue of the post of Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said, “I am surprised to see, the kind of statements that have come in in the last 15 days. This whole issue of CM for 2.5 years, this was never discussed in front of me, nor any such decision was taken. I asked Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari, and they confirmed that at no point was such a decision was taken.”

He said, “People gave full majority to our pre-poll alliance. BJP emerged the single largest party. Our strike rate has improved by 75% in this election. It was a gift by the people of Maharashtra for our work.”

“In the last 5 years, my admin has worked tremendously in the fields of railway, airport, and infrastructure. We revived several projects. Cities and villages witnessed development. I have done all I could do in my capacity for the farmers of the state,” Fadnavis said.

“I thank PM Modi, party president Shah, all top leaders, and all those who worked with me. The governor has asked me to continue as acting CM till an alternative arrangement is made. No new decisions will be taken,” Fadnavis said.

“Our only goal is to ensure that the chief minister is from Shiv Sena. There is no question of negotiations on this. Even if there is a disruption of some sorts the decision taken by party chief Uddhav Thackeray will be final,” - Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil

Meanwhile, Ministers Tawde and Bawankule have met Union Minister and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.

Two Maharashtra ministers and BJP leaders who were denied tickets for the last month's Assembly polls have met Union minister Nitin Gadkari here. Vinod Tawde and Chandrashekhar Bawankule met Gadkari at the latter's Worli residence here. Maharashtra minister Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar, who is considered close to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, was also present when Tawde and Bawankule met Gadkari.
