New Delhi: The United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set an ambitious target of reducing the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes to half by 2020. However, according to a recent study report, while deaths due to road accidents increased by 8.1% globally during 1990-2017, it increased by 58.7% during this period in India. With the plan of the Govt of India to infuse ₹ 15 trillion in the highway sector in next 5 years, fatalities in highway accidents in India may increase significantly unless effective fatality resilient policy and measures are integrated in the highway construction right from the planning stage.

In this context, a one- day National Workshop on Highway Accidents and Emergency Medical Management was organised at the India International Centre New Delhi on 28th February by the Policy Perspective Foundation (PPF) in association with the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. PPF is a Delhi based non-profit and apolitical think tank dealing with various issues related to national interest including challenges to internal peace, stability and developments within India.

This event was inaugurated by Rajiv Pratap Rudy, former Union Minister. Prominent technocrats, doctors, professionals and experts from reputed institutions like AIIMS Trauma Center, Institute of Road & Traffic Education, Asian Society for Emergency Medicine, School of Planning & Architecture, National Crime Record Bureau, Sphere India, Save Life Foundation, Humanitarian Aid International and Indian Observer Post, etc participated in the deliberations. Besides Dr Tanu Jain Asst DGHS, other prominent Panelists included Dr Rohit Baluja (IRTE), Dr MC Mishra, former Director AIIMS; Dr Amit Gupta, Trauma Centre AIIMS; Dr Muzaffar Ahmad, former Member NDMA; Dr Tamorish Kole, President of Asian Society for Emergency Medicine and NM Prusty, President, Humanitarian Aid International, etc.

During the deliberations, it was impressed that a mission mode approach is called for to reduce fatalities in road accidents as per the UN Sustainable goal target. Some of the significant suggestions included the installation of vandal-proof emergency call boxes along the highways for prompt communication by victims, up-gradation of village-level community health care centres with Emergency Medical Service facilities, introduction of 2-wheeler scooter ambulance with miniaturised medical equipment and capacity building of villagers alongside the highways.
