A Challenge to Provide Healthcare Services Amid Covid-19  in Odisha

India is fighting against Covid-19 and Odisha a state in Eastern part of India is in panic stage. With the Nonresident Odias coming from Chenai, Gujurat, West Bengal, Maharashra and UP the Covid-19 cases have been increased now to 400+. Every day the numbers are increasing with geographic distribution of entire State. Kalinga Institute of Medical science has setup its 500 beded Covid-19 Hospital at KIMS KIIT campus Bhubaneswar.

To take care of rural and tribal belt Covid-19 patients it has set up 200 bedded special Covid hospitals at Baripada, Bolangir and Kandhamal District headquarters. Dr Achyuta Samanta, M.P. Kandhamal and Founder KIIT, KISS is well-known as a social reformist in India in general and Odisha in particular. A visionary of free tribal education from KG to PG is kind enough to serve the State in this domain in this emergency situation.

Milk Tooth Removed from Airway in a 7-yr Child at KIMS:

KIMS Bhubaneswar performed successful removal of a foreign body from the airway of a 7-year old child. The child was feeling breathing difficulty as it has blocked almost half of the lungs. The procedure was smoothly completed despite an extremely challenging situation due to COVID-19 pandemic. The operation was carried out in ENT Department of KIMS in oral and nasal area which is considered to be a harbouring area of COVID 19 virus. There was a high possibility of aerosol transmission to health care workers.

The child was from Soro, Balasore District of Odisha and has problem of breath and cough after waking up from sleep. Earlier, the patient had visited various nearby institutions but a definitive diagnosis and treatment could not be given. In KIMS, Dr. Khageswar Rout, senior ENT surgeon examined the history and reports of the patient and found that there was a recent loss of milk tooth which was missed.

A computed tomography of the airway was taken which revealed a tooth obstructing the right bronchus. The treatment plan was further taken up for emergency rigid bronchoscope with optical forceps. Under all aseptic measures, including personal protection equipment (PPE KIT) for all operation theatre staffs, a rigid bronchoscopy was performed with spontaneous ventilation. Since the visible part was smooth and slippery, the removal of the milk tooth was difficult and challenging for the senior surgeon and his team.

This life saving procedure was made possible by the team work of. KIMS doctors, surgeon Dr. Khageswar Rout, assisted by Dr. Gifty Zacharias, Dr. Rachit and nursing staff have carried out the entire procedure and saved the life of the child. Excellent anaesthetic care was provided by the team consisting of senior anaesthetist, Dr. Amit Pradhan, Dr. Jagdish C. Mishra,  Dr. Amrita and Dr. Aparna Jayaraj.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS thanked the team and said, the treatment shows the commitment and social responsibility of KIMS amid COVID 19 pandemic. He wished the child a speedy recovery.

KIIT School of Public Health organizes Quiz Competition on “COVID-19 Pandemic:
In view of COVID-19 pandemic, KIIT School of Public Health organised Quizes, among MPH (Master of Public Health) and MHA (Master of Hospital Administration) students with an objective of empowering students to protect themselves and their fellow citizens from the pandemic.

1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Ms. Madhulipika Giri, Dr. Indira Sonal Ghai, and Dr. Upasana Nayak respectively. Other students were given the certificate of participation. The quiz was conceptualized by the Director, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Kumar Satpathy and prizes were distributed in presence of all.

Rotator Cuff Conclave: Successful Treatment of Shoulder Disability:

KIMS Department of Orthopedics has successfully organized one day CME-cum-Live Surgical Workshop under Dr. Debashish Mishra (Organizing Secretary). Two live surgery of Arthroscopic (endoscopic) Rotator Cuff Repair with minimal incision were successfully operated.

Two eminent National faculties with International repute Dr. Debasis Chatterjee and Dr. Sanjay Desai taught young Orthopedic Surgeons about Arthroscopy Surgery. 80 Orthopedic Surgeons from Odisha attended it and were rewarded 4 CME points from Odisha Medical Council.

Covid 19 Hospitals:

The Covid19 special hospital follows all best practices and follows WHO and ICMR and oher Government guidelines. There is completely separate provisions for Covid and other patients and maximum care is taken for safety and security of Doctors and paramedical  staffs those are the Corona fighters.

Indian Air Force showers flowers on KIMS:

As a mark of thankfulness and honour to all the Covid worriers, Indian Air Force has showered flowers from the sky in and around KIMS Covid Hospital. In order to boost the morale of the Covid Warriors, who have dedicated themselves for the recuperation of the patients affected by Novel Covid-19 Virus, the IAF has taken such an initiative.

“We express our heartfelt gratitude to Government of India for motivating the spirits of Covid Warriors at KIMS. Because of this, the willpower of all the Doctors, Nurses, and Paramedical Staff along with all others Covid Warriors will be escalated by and large and they would come forward to counter the onslaught of Novel Corona Virus”, stated Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT, KISS & KIMS. He also thanked Chief Minister of Odisha Sri Naveen Patanik for his support to open a special Covid Hospital at KIMS. Among the dignitaries present were  Padmashree Prof. (Dr.) Subrat Acharya, Pro-Chancellor, KIIT DU; Dr. Bishnu Panigrahi, CEO, KIMS; Maj. Gen. Prof.(Dr.) P.K. Patnaik, Principal, KIMS and Dr. Ambika Prasad Mohanty, Medical Superintendent, PBMH, KIMS  amid many staff members  of KIMS, KIIT & KISS.

Similarly various initiatives are taken for other Covid Hospitals in Rural and tribal belts like Baripada, Bolangir and Phulbani. Facilities are given in those localities following all guidelines so that people across the Satte can get the facilities to fight against Covid-19.

So against all odds with the challenges of COVID19 patients KIMS Bhubaneswar has taken care of other Medical activities following all guidelines which is an example for other Medicals in eastern India. Image Courtesy – KISS University / achyutamanta.com
